The challenge

With growing e-commerce volumes and a commitment to reducing its environmental impact, Decathlon faced the challenge of rethinking how products are shipped to customers, especially within its Ship-from-Store operations. Traditional single-use cardboard packaging contributed significantly to waste and carbon emissions, conflicting with the company’s objectives. The need was clear: find an innovative solution that reduces packaging waste and aligns with their commitment to circularity without compromising operational efficiency.

To address this challenge, Decathlon collaborated with Movopack who provided custom-branded, durable and lightweight packaging designed to be reused over 20 times. Customers receiving their orders in Movopack packaging can easily return it by scanning the QR code and dropping it into any red postbox across Europe, free of charge.

This system ensures the packaging’s return, sanitation, and reuse, effectively creating a circular packaging loop. The entire flow is designed to be intuitive for customers and operationally simple for Decathlon’s store personnel.

The results

By switching to Movopack’s reusable packaging, Decathlon can achieve up to a 99% reduction in packaging waste, significantly cutting down on the materials that would otherwise end up in landfills. Furthermore, the initiative has the potential to reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 75%, aligning with the company’s climate goals.

Moreover, the ease of participation in the circular experience reinforces Decathlon’s environmental messaging and helps build a more engaging and responsible customer experience.
