How Reusable Packaging Reduces Carbon Footprint in E-Commerce

The fast-paced growth of e-commerce has transformed the way we shop. With every click-to-cart order comes packaging which is often single-use, quickly discarded, and carbon-intensive. From cardboard boxes and plastic bags to paper pouches and bubble wrap, the majority of today’s e-commerce packaging is designed to be used once and thrown away. This creates not only massive amounts of physical waste, but also a significant carbon footprint.

From Waste to Circular Value

As the pressure to act on climate change intensifies — both from consumers and regulators — it’s clear that the old model of packaging no longer works. Brands are starting to explore sustainable solutions such as reusable packaging.

Designed to be used again and again, reusable packaging offers a circular, closed-loop system that breaks away from the take-make-waste approach. Instead of generating waste with each delivery, it keeps the same packaging in circulation.

At Movo, we have built a seamless circular system. Brands deliver their orders in our sustainable, custom packaging, customers receive the products, and once empty, they simply drop the packaging into any postbox across Europe free of charge. From there, Movo takes care of collection, cleaning, and preparing the packaging for its next use.

The Numbers Behind Reusable Packaging

A question we hear often: doesn’t returning and cleaning the packaging cancel out the carbon savings? The answer, backed by data, is a resounding no.

Movo commissioned a comparative Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) which brought clear results: our reusable packaging becomes more sustainable than single-use alternatives from the second use. By the time a packaging unit has been reused 20 times, it achieves an 84% reduction in CO₂ emissions and 98% waste saving compared to a single-use cardboard box with 70% recycled content.

How? Because the production phase is one of the most carbon-intensive stages of a packaging’s life. Reusing the same packaging multiple times reduces the need for repeated production, which leads to exponential savings in carbon emissions over time.

Small Change with Big Potential

For brands that are actively seeking ways to cut their carbon footprint, reusable packaging is one of the most actionable tools available. Unlike more complex interventions, switching to reusable packaging can be integrated into your operations without overhauling your entire supply chain. It sends a clear message to your customers: that your brand is innovative, responsible, and committed to a lower-impact future.
